Handout

Actively Engaged in Discipleship
What an all encompassing topic, discipleship! I am overwhelmed and grateful to be able share some of my thoughts and feelings about discipleship. I have spent years learning, reading, practicing and trying to become a better disciple. I hope some of what I have learned is helpful to you on your path to being actively engaged in discipleship. – Christy Anderson May 7, 2011

Two Scripture Chains that I have found meaningful on my path of Discipleship:

Come Unto Him/Doctrine of Christ Scripture Chain
3 Nephi 11:32 - 41
3 Nephi 12:19 – 20
Doctrine and Covenants 10:61 – 70
2 Nephi 31
Helaman 3:27, 30 and 35
1 Nephi 10:18 – 22
1 Nephi 13:40 – 42

The Manner of Happiness Scripture Chain
Mosiah 2:41
Alma 50:19 – 23
2 Nephi 5:27
4 Nephi 1:15 -18
John 17:20 – 26
Matt 11:28 – 30
Mosiah 3:3 – 7
Mosiah 2:4 and 41
Alma 50:1 – 6
Proverbs 14:34
Psalms 37:25

Books that teach us about Jesus Christ
The Book of Mormon – Our prophets have asked us to read this book daily – Joseph Smith said the Book of Mormon is “…the most correct of any book on earth…and a man would get nearer to God by abiding by its precepts, than by any other book.”
The Bible –
The Doctrine and Covenants and the Pearl of Great Price
General Conference talks

Along with the above, studying the lives of the Apostles and Prophets is very important.
I have personally read and recommend:
Jesus the Christ by James E. Talmage (You can listen to this book at LDS.org)
My Father David O. McKay by David Lawrence McKay
President Hinckley’s Biography by Sheri Dew
Joseph Smith the Prophet by Truman G. Madsen
Ezra Taft Benson’s Biography by Sheri Dew
The History of the Church by Joseph Smith (I have only read bits and pieces)
Joseph Smith by His Mother Lucy Mack Smith

There are other “Good Books” that lead us to Jesus Christ.
I have personally read and recommend:
Of One Heart, The Glory of the City of Enoch by Neal A. Maxwell
In his Steps by Charles M. Sheldon (recommended to me by Reed Benson)
The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis
Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis
The Princess and the Goblins by George MacDonald (C.S. Lewis considered George MacDonald his spiritual mentor)
The Kingdom and the Crown by Gerald Lund
The Lectures on Faith by Joseph Smith

One of the best talks I have ever read on Coming Unto Jesus Christ

- Come unto Me by Jeffrey R. Holland.

“My desire for you is to have more straightforward experience with the Savior’s life and teachings. Perhaps sometimes we come to Christ too obliquely, focusing on structure or methods or elements of Church administration. Those are important and, like the tithes of mint and anise and cummin Christ spoke of (see Matt. 23:23), should be observed—but not without attention to the weightier matters of the kingdom, first and foremost of which is a personal spiritual relationship with Deity, including the Savior, whose kingdom this is.”

Adapted from a Church Educational System Young Adult fireside given on 2 March 1997 at Brigham Young University. You can search for it at LDS.org. This is the link.

Bible Dictionary Definition of Disciple - A pupil or learner; a name used to denote (1) the twelve, also called apostles, (2) all followers of Jesus Christ. We also read of disciples of John the Baptist and of the Pharisees (Mark 2:18).

Daughters Arise by Christy Anderson

Daughters Arise and follow that road to the Divinity within each of us.

The Savior descended below us all that He could lead the way.

There is no sorrow so deep, no burden so heavy, no pain so intense

He felt it all that He may succor us and lead us safely home.

Do we trust His love and his Promises sure – Enough to give our hearts to Him?

I hear Him say, Daughters Arise, “Come Follow Me,” Mine is the perfect path

What are we withholding from our Savior that we too may win the Prize?

The journey requires much but the rewards are endless and eternal

The Blessings Divine are worth all we have to give and so much more

This is why Saints of Old, with joyful cries, willingly sacrificed all-

And with Saints of old, I too testify, This is the Christ –

He is the way, the Truth and the Light!

He is the Healer of Our Soul, Our Guide and Faithful Companion

Daughters Arise to the Divinity within us All – Let us Follow Him Safely Home
